It has been a busy past month, especially for all those seeking political office at the rarefied top echelons of government.
Some cases have been brewing in court for that long, too, even with an accelerated hearing. the Senator Ted Stevens case, specifically.
He was aiming for re-election and applied for accelerated hearing for his corruption trial. He got the fast-track trial but never bargained for the outcome.
Perhaps, he had history in mind when he continued his campaign, even during his trial period, and also vowed to stand for re-election next week despite his indictment on felony charges!
Only 10 US Senators have ever returned to the Senate after such a conviction, even without a sentencing date being fixed immediately afterward.
In effect, the self-styled 'incredible senator' from - actually, representing, is more like it - the US State of Alaska is saying that nobody can touch him mainly because he did nothing wrong.
Somehow, I agree with him: he paid almost $200, 000 of his own money for the renovation to his mountain home.
Why should he be held responsible for the contractor's going beyond the call of duty to turn the bungalow into a two-storey building with extra facilities?
It is not funny. In my country, Senators used to get free recharge cards for their cellphones every month from a major GSM company bent on keeping call rates high by lobbying the Senators.
Well, in all that mass escapade, nobody actually got convicted for corruption by even the very venomous eagle-eyed EFCC of Nigeria!
Of course, that must have been during the dusty and very hazy Harmattan weather, when visibility is very low, even for an eagle-eyed corruption watchdog.
Ha-ha. No. Actually, I think there was no prosecution because there was no evidence linking the used recharge cards to the company or the honorable senators.
